How to upskill as a virtual assistant

The fastest way to earn more as a VA is to solve bigger problems for clients. That usually means adding one well-chosen skill at a time, not collecting certificates.

Choose the right next skill

Look at your current clients. What do they keep asking for that you cannot do yet? A skill your client already needs is one you can practise on real work, with real feedback.

  • From admin: bookkeeping basics, spreadsheets, CRM management.
  • From support: help-centre writing, chat tools, simple automations.
  • From social media: short video editing, ads basics, analytics.
  • From anything: project coordination and writing clear step-by-step guides.

Learn in small, finished pieces

  1. Pick one outcome, for example "build a monthly sales report in a spreadsheet".
  2. Learn just enough to make it: one course module or a few official help articles.
  3. Make it for real, then ask someone to review it.
  4. Add it to your portfolio with a short note on the result.

Free places to learn

Most tools have free official training: the help centres and academies of the tools your clients already use are the best starting point, because they are accurate and up to date.

Show the new skill

Update your profile: add the skill, the tool, and a portfolio project that proves it. Then tell your current clients what you can now help with. Existing clients are the easiest people to say yes.
